On December 31, 2014 after a seven week trial, a Long Beach, California jury voted (10-2) to award $8 Million to the five children of Darren Burley. Burley’s family sued the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department after Burley’s heart stopped during his arrest on August 3, 2012. Burley suffered irreparable brain damage and died in the hospital ten days later from lack of oxygen to the brain. Sheriff deputies contended that Mr. Burley died from a “cocktail” of drugs that he took before his arrest. The jury rejected the defense’s contention in finding for the plaintiffs.
